CARROLLTON, Ga. – On Friday, University of West Georgia Director of Athletics Daryl Dickey announced he has accepted the resignation of head golf coach Barry Harwell, who steps down after six successful seasons at the helm of both UWG Golf programs.
"I want to take this opportunity to thank Coach Harwell for the tremendous job that he has done with our golf programs," said Dickey. "Our level of performance, expectation of excellence, and championship play and representation has certainly been outstanding under his leadership and guidance. He will be leaving our golf programs on very solid ground."
Dickey continued, "Both programs under his leadership have been able to achieve record setting performances, including this season's first ever conference championship."
In six seasons as head coach, Harwell elevated the UWG men's and women's golf programs to new heights. In 2015, Harwell led the men's golf team to their first ever team appearance in the NCAA South/Southeast Regional, and made it back-to-back trips to the postseason in 2016 for the men's team.
This season, Harwell led the Wolves women's team to the first Gulf South Conference Championship in golf history at West Georgia, and next week will coach the Wolves in their first NCAA Postseason appearance in the history of UWG women's golf.
Harwell coached a total of 13 All-GSC performers across both sports at West Georgia and coached four different golfers that were recognized at either the All-Region or All-American levels.
Three different players have been named GSC Freshmen of the Year under Harwell and a West Georgia golfer has been named GSC Player of the Year in each of the past four seasons, with two different golfers earning that distinction. Harwell has also been named GSC Coach of the Year in four of his six seasons at West Georgia.
"We wish Barry well and thank him for his time and efforts with our golf programs," concluded Dickey.
The university will start a national search for its next head coach immediately. Any interest or questions regarding the search should be directed to Athletic Director Daryl Dickey at
