CARROLLTON, Ga. – One UWG men’s golfer was honored by the Gulf South Conference for his play last month as Lucas Mota was named the league’s Freshman Golfer of the Month for his outstanding play during September.

The freshman from Barcelona, Spain came onto the UWG and GSC golf scene in a big way to start the 2018-19 season at the Full Moon Invitational. In his first collegiate competitive round, Mota set a school record with a 64 in the opening round at Timberline Golf Club in Calera, Alabama.

Mota went on to win that tournament after shooting a 72 in the final round, finishing with a six-under total, enough for a one shot victory over Montevallo’s B.J. Scott.

In his next tournament, the AFLAC Cougar Invitational in Columbus, Mota opened with a 72 and 74 on day one, but came back with a 69 in the final round to finish in a 28th place tie.

Mota becomes the first golfer to win Freshman of the Month since now senior Sam Jones claimed the Award in 2015.

The Wolves’ next tournament is their annual home tournament, the Matt Dyas Invitational. It is set for October 22-23 at Oak Mountain Championship Golf Club.
