HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – Sam Jones opened his third career NCAA postseason tournament with a 76 in the first round of the NCAA South/Southeast Regional at the El Campeon Course at Mission Inn Resort and Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida.
On the front nine, Jones was up and down, making four pars and a pair each of birdies, bogeys, and double bogeys, making the turn at three-over par.
Jones made birdie at the par five 10th to get back to two under, and then was cruising through the back nine before a setback at the 16th, making a double bogey six, and finishing four-over in the first round.
The first round 76 puts Jones in a 38th place tie after 18 holes.
Additionally on Thursday, Jones was one of 30 semifinalists announced for the Division II Jack Nicklaus Award presented by Barbasol, given to the top Division II golfer in the country. Finalists for the award will be announced May 15, and the winner will be announced on May 30. Jones is the second UWG golfer to be named a Nicklaus Award semifinalist in the past four years. Barrett Waters was a Nicklaus Award Semifinalist following the 2015-16 season.
