CARROLLTON, Ga. – One former UWG golfer is back in his home country making waves as Sam Jones won the New Zealand Amateur Championship this past weekend at Remeura Golf Club in Auckland, New Zealand.

Jones, a native of Taranaki, New Zealand, defeated Mitchell Kale in 4&3 in the 36-hole match play finale to claim the Championship. Jones trailed Kale after the morning 18, but eagled his first hole of the final 18 to square the match. Going into the final nine, Jones had a one-hole advantage, and would win the 28th, 31st, and 33rd holes of the match to win.

“It feels pretty awesome now,” said Jones following his win. “I think it’s going to take a while to sink in to be honest, I’m absolutely thrilled.”

No stranger to the spotlight, Jones was a standout at UWG making the All-Gulf South Conference team twice and capping his career as an Honorable Mention All-America selection, making him the third All-American in UWG men’s golf history.
