CARROLLTON, Ga. - The 2019 UWG tennis team opened the spring season in Memphis, Tenn. on Friday as part of a four-match swing this weekend. The Wolves lost the opening match of the season in heartbreaking fashion, falling 5-4 to Rhodes College at the Denavent Tennis Center in Memphis, Tenn. 

All three doubles matches were settled by the same score, with each team winning 8-4 on opening day. West Georgia was on the losing side of that score in No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, with the team of Meg Cummings and Shelby Brown winning in No. 2 doubles. 

Freshman Softia Soltis and sophomore Bailey McCammon each won their individual match in dramatic fashion. Soltis went up against Rhodes sophomore Dasha Safarian in No. 2 singles competition, winning 6-0 in the first set of her first championship season at UWG. Safarian came back with a 6-4 win in the second set and Soltis took care of business in the tiebreak, winning 11-9. McCammon had a similar path in No. 4 singles, but lost 6-1 in the first set before winning a hard-fouth, 7-5 second set. McCammon was dominant in the tiebreak, winning 10-3. 

Shelby Brown defeated Julia Darkey in No. 3 singles when Darkey retired with a 5-3 lead in the first set to round out the singles winners for the Wolves. Freshman Timia Commodore put up a fight against Michelle Adan-Pol in No. 1 singles, falling 6-4, 6-0 while No. 4 player Meg Cummings lost to Caroline Doherty by a 6-4, 7-5 score. Jamie Bryant fought hard for a 7-6 win in the opening set, but was forced to retire to close out the match. 

The Wolves will take on Spring Hill at 9;30 a.m. tomorrow, followed by a match with Southern Arkansas at 2:30 p.m.
