CARROLLTON, Ga. - The West Georgia volleyball dropped a pair of games on the second day of the Bellarmine Kickoff Classic with a loss on Saturday morning at Knights Hall in Louisville, Ken., falling 3-0 to Arkansas-Fort Smith, and falling to Tiffin 3-1 in the afternoon match.
Arkansas-Fort Smith opened the match with a 6-1 lead in the first set, powering through to win 25-10 and take a 1-0 lead in the match. In the second set, West Georgia stayed close to AFS through the first half of the frame, trailing by a slim 14-12 margin midway through the set. But Arkansas-Fort Smith went on an 11-4 run to close out the set and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, the Wolves again stayed close until midway through the frame, trailing 13-10 at that point. Arkansas-Fort Smith then reeled off five straight points, powering to a 25-17 victory to close out the match.
Anjelina Webb and Aisha Ambrose led the Wolves at the net, collecting eight and seven kills in the match, respectively. West Georgia will close out the weekend at 4:30 p.m. today, taking on the Tiffin Dragons at the Bellarmine Kickoff Classic.
The Wolves and Dragons came out in the afternoon match, with Tiffin taking the first set by a 25-13 final. The second set was a marathon, see-saw battle as both teams traded point after point. Neither team wanted to give in, but the Wolves eventually broke through, taking the second set 34-32.
In the third and fourth sets, the Dragons pulled away early in both, winning the third 25-13 and the fourth and final set 25-12.
Anjelina Webb led the Wolves offensively, rattling off 21 kills. Tricia Melegari led on the back line with 18 digs.
