Carrollton, GA - The 2017 West Georgia baseball season is here, as the Wolves will host the Augusta Jaguars in a three-game series this weekend at Cole Field. UWG is coming off of its best season under head coach Skip Fite as they finished the 2016 campaign 42-16 overall with a 22-11 record in the Gulf South Conference.

The Wolves also made history last season as they earned a bid to the NCAA Regional for the first time since the 1998 season. UWG finished third in the regional, knocking off the number one seed Tampa Spartans and second seed West Florida Argonauts in the process.

With last year's success comes higher expectations, but Head Coach Skip Fite continues to preach to his team the importance of playing one game at a time. "We know the bar has been set a little higher, but we have to continue to back it up," said Fite. "Right now we aren't worried about how far we get or how high we are ranked. Our biggest game right now is against Augusta," added Fite.

The Wolves will begin the year with a much different lineup than last year, as UWG lost six of their eight position players to graduation, transfer, and the MLB Draft. Also, UWG lost their three weekend starters from last season to graduation. Although there is a lot of turnover from last season, Coach Fite senses a familiar feeling from 2016. "We have a completely different style of team than last year with a lot of new faces, but the feeling of getting started this year is the same as last year. We hope that is the culture we are beginning to set here," added Fite.

The Wolves have a very young roster in comparison to the last several years, as freshmen or sophomores fill 16 of the 35 active roster spots, but there are a few seniors that continue to fill the veteran leadership roles on this team.

Artemis Kadkhodaian and Colton Duttweiler are entering their fourth season at UWG and Coach Fite knows the importance of the leadership on this young team. "Those guys have matured as ball players and people as they have been here. They have improved their work ethic and we hope our young players will model their work ethic after those guys," said Fite.
