Carrollton, GA – For the second time this season a UWG baseball standout has received a weekly honor from the Gulf South Conference. Andres Fernandez was named Tuesday the GSC Pitcher of the Week for his dominating performance in the Wolves’ Saturday win over Albany State.

 

Fernandez, a junior from Miami, Fla., tossed seven innings of two-hit relief in the Wolves’ 13-3 triumph over the Golden Rams. He allowed only one, unearned run, and struck out a whopping 15 batters That total includes fanning 10 of the game’s final 11 batters.

 

The 15-strikeout performance by Fernandez was but one strikeout away from a 51-year old school record. UWG Hall of Fame member Buddy Murphy holds the all-time West Georgia record of 16 strikeouts in a single game, a mark he set in 1967.

 

Fernandez earned Saturday’s win, pushing his record on the season to 2-0. He boasts an earned run average of 2.81, and is holding opposing hitters to a .161 batting average.

 

UWG is now 10-0 on the season. The Wolves travel Wednesday for a non-conference game at Columbus State. GSC play begins this weekend as Mississippi College visits Cold Field for a three-game series.
