Carrollton, GA – Two University of West Georgia student-athletes were named Tuesday to an elite category of Gulf South Conference student-athletes. Women’s golf standout Franziska Bremm, and baseball star Cade Marlowe were named Tuesday as the GSC revealed the league’s 23rd annual Top Ten.

The GSC Top Ten recognizes the top five female and top five male student-athletes for their athletic, academic, and extracurricular achievements during both the 2018-19 academic year, and for their entire careers. Of this group, the top female and top male will receive the GSC Commissioner’s Trophy at the league’s annual awards banquet Thursday evening at Pensacola Beach, Fla.

The selection of Bremm and Marlowe is historic for the UWG program. This marks the first time that UWG has had a Top Ten recipient and Commissioner’s Trophy finalist in both male and female categories in the same year. Also, should Bremm and/or Marlowe capture the Commissioner’s Trophy, it would also be historic for West Georgia. No UWG student-athlete has captured the honor since men’s basketball standout and UWG Hall of Fame member Lonnie Edwards won the honor in 1998.

On the men’s side, Marlowe is only the fourth West Georgia student-athlete ever selected to the GSC Top Ten. Beyond Edwards in 1998, Dallas Dickey (football) was a Top Ten honoree in 2016, and Stuart Drew (baseball). Bremm is the third UWG female to be named GSC Top Ten. The others were both cross country performers: Marta Valentic in 1997, and Amanda McCann in 2001. Also, women’s basketball star Lisa McGhee was named in 1986 as GSC Female Athlete of the Year, an honor that was the forerunner of the Commissioner’s Trophy.

The presentations will be made at the GSC’s Annual Awards Banquet on Thursday, May 30, at the Hilton Pensacola Beach. Following the top ten presentations, the conference will reveal the winners of the Commissioner’s Trophies and recognize the All-Sports Trophy Champions
