Carrollton, GA – The list of postseason honors and accolades for Cade Marlowe has been long. Wednesday, Marlowe’s excellence on the field and beyond drew the attention of Major League Baseball.

The Seattle Mariners chose Marlowe in the 20th round—pick 606—of the 2019 Major League Baseball Draft. Marlowe if the first West Georgia player taken in the draft since Caleb Lopes was a 33rd round choice of the St. Louis Cardinals in 2016. Also, this is highest a West Georgia player has been chosen since pitcher Mike Lilly was picked in round 20, pick #506, back in 1985.

Marlowe just completed his senior season, playing for recently retired coach Skip Fite. He helped lead UWG to a 28-23 record, including a pair of wins in the Gulf South Conference Tournament. Marlowe batted .389 as a senior, and ended his career with a variety of school career and single season records.

“I am certainly very proud of Cade,” said Fite after his selection by the Mariners. “He has worked extremely hard to put himself in this position, and is very deserving of the opportunity to play professionally.”

Marlowe’s list of postseason honors as a player is highlighted by his Honorable Mention All-America status from National Collegiate Baseball Writers. He was also a consensus All-South Region selection, and was named All-Gulf South Conference First Team.

Off the field, Marlowe has added another major honor to his resume. He was named Wednesday a second team member of the Google Cloud Academic All-American Division II Baseball Team. The honor is a result of balloting my members of CoSida, the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Marlowe is the first UWG student-athlete to earn Academic All-America status since football player Alex Macaulay received the honor following the 2014 season.

Marlowe was named last week as winner of the 2019 Gulf South Conference Commissioner’s Trophy, symbolic of his selection as the league’s top male student-athlete for the 2018-19 academic year. He and women’s golf standout Franziska Bremm gave UWG a clean sweep of this year’s top awards at the GSC Awards Banquet in Pensacola Beach, Fla.
