CARROLLTON, Ga. - Night-in and night-out throughout the 2017-18 UWG basketball season, Marquill Smith came to play. The Gulf South Conference coaches recognized his efforts on Tuesday afternoon, voting Smith as a First Team All-GSC honoree.

The junior led the Gulf South Conference in scoring this season, averaging a blistering 23.3 points per game on the year, including 22.4 points per game against Gulf South Conference competition. He was also fourth in the league in rebounding, pulling down 8.6 boards per game. He was a double-double machine as well, collecting a double-double in eight of his 27 games played this season.

The last four games of the year saw Smith on fire, as he scored at least 30 points in three of the final four contests, including a season-high 40 points against Shorter on February 14. In the regular season finale last Thursday, with the season on the line, Smith poured in 39 points and pulled down 17 rebounds to lead the Wolves to a berth in the 2018 Gulf South Conference championships.

For head coach Michael Cooney, Smith's selection marks the 14th player under his direction to earn All-Gulf South Conference honors and the third First Team honoree. Da'Ron Sims in 2011 was Cooney's first player to earn First Team All-GSC honors, and Deonta Stocks was the second in the 2014-15 season.

West Georgia will play in the Super Tuesday round of the Gulf South Conference tournament this evening, taking on the Valdosta State Blazers in Valdosta, Ga., with the opening tip slated for 8:00 p.m.
