CARROLLTON, Ga. - The 2018-19 men's basketball season at the University of West Georgia is assured to be a historic one, with the curtain rising on November 9 in Cleveland, Tenn. The open of the new season begins the Dave Moore era in Carrollton, after the new coach took the reigns of the program this past spring.
Moore released the 2018-19 schedule this week, a 28-game slate that features 14 home games at The Coliseum, including 10 Gulf South Conference contests. In addition, UWG will have one exhibition matchup, taking on the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens on November 1. The Wolves will be led this season by senior combo guard Marquill Smith, who was an All-Gulf South Conference performer last season, leading the GSC in scoring with a 23.1 points per game average.
West Georgia will open the schedule with three-straight road contests, beginning with a GSC/SSC Crossover Classic on the campus of Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn. on November 9-10. The Wolves play Palm Beach Atlantic in the opener on November 9 at 6 p.m., followed by a clash with Embry-Riddle on November 10 at 2 p.m. November 14 will bring the final road game of the three-game stretch to open the season, as the Wolves take on Queens University in Charlotte, NC at 7 p.m.
Two of the next three games will be at home before the Gulf South Conference opener against GSC power Alabama Huntsville on the road on November 29, beginning with a matchup against Benedict on November 17 at 5:30 p.m. in the first game under Moore in The Coliseum. The first home GSC matchup will come on December 3, as the Shorter Hawks come to town for the first doubleheader of the year. The women's game that night will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at approximately 7:30.
This year's conference schedule format features 20 games, with at least one game against every team in the league and a home-and-home season series against selected opponents. The Wolves will face Shorter, Lee, Valdosta State, West Florida, Union, Christian Brothers, Alabama Huntsville and Auburn-Montgomery twice, while playing Mississippi College, Delta State, Montevallo and West Alabama only once.
West Georgia will travel to Valdosta for the first meeting between the rival schools on January 17 at 8 p.m., with a return trip against the Blazers in The Coliseum on Thursday, February 7 at 7:30 p.m. Senior Night in The Coliseum will be on February 28 at 7:30 p.m. against Alabama Huntsville.
