CARROLLTON, Ga. - The West Georgia faithful will get an early glimpse at the 2017-18 men's basketball team this week, as the Wolves play host to the Carver Cougars in the first exhibition game of the year on Thursday evening at The Coliseum. Tipoff for that contest is set for 7:00 p.m.
This will mark one of the first preseason exhibition games for the West Georgia Wolves in The Coliseum, as head coach Michael Cooney has routinely gone to Division I schools for preseason games. The Wolves will have two exhibition games this week, taking on Carver on Thursday, followed by a matchup at Kennesaw State on Sunday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
Fifteen names are on the 2017-18 roster for Cooney and his staff, but only two were members of the squad last season, led by junior point guard Aren Ulmer. The Hayward, Ca. native has 41 career games under his belt, with 15 starts coming last season. He played in 16 games as a true freshman in the 2015-16 season, then saw action in 25 games as a sophomore in 2016-17. The speedy guard averaged 5.4 points per game last season and just over three assists per game as a sophomore.
The only other returner from last season's roster is redshirt freshman Ray Reeves, who did not play but is a sharpshooter who can light up the scoreboard from beyond the arc.
Cooney will depend on a trio of Division I transfers to carry the load with Ulmer and Reeves this season, beginning with Marquill Smith, a 6-4 swingman who transferred to UWG from San Francsico. Originally from Miami Gardens, Fla., Smith was a highly-recruited athlete out of Miami Christian and will be a solid contributor for the Wolves this season.
Joining Ulmer in the backcourt will be Jack Shaughnessy, who transferred to UWG from Seattle University in the offseason. A gritty 6-2 guard, Shaughnessy will provide solid depth at the point. In the paint will be Karlos Odum, who comes to UWG from the University of North Florida, where he was a standout for the Division I program.
The Wolves, rated eighth in the Preseason Gulf South Conference Poll, will take on the Cougars beginning at 7 p.m. on Thursday. Admission will be complimentary for UWG fans, with the doors opening at 6 p.m.
