CLINTON, Miss. – The UWG women’s basketball team won their third straight and completed a perfect road trip with a 66-61, overtime win on the road at Mississippi College on Saturday afternoon.

The Wolves had a chance to win it at the end of regulation, but in the end would grind out an overtime win, led by 21 points from senior Kayla Carter.

West Georgia trailed for the majority of the opening half, leading only at 3-2 after Jessica Brown put the Wolves on the board with a three-pointer on UWG’s first possession. MC led by as much as nine in the first half, but the Wolves would battle back, and cut it to just a one-point deficit midway through the second quarter.

The teams traded a pair of short runs over the final five minutes, with UWG getting back within one with a minute left, but a jumper from MC’s Lauran Sheriff made it a three-point, 29-26 Choctaw lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, West Georgia erased the halftime deficit, despite the Choctaws extending the lead to double-digits at the 6:10 mark of the period. The Wolves closed the third quarter on a 7-2 run, tying things up at 43-43.

Right out of the gates in the final quarter, Kayla Carter gave UWG their first lead since early in the opening period as her layup made it 45-43. No team led by more than three points for the remainder of the period, as the teams traded baskets.

With the Wolves trailing by two, Kayla Carter hit a layup with 1:28 to go to tie things up at 54-54. Both teams had numerous chances to take the lead, including UWG’s chance at a buzzer beater, but Carter would lose the ball out of bounds and overtime would ensue.

MC hit a three-pointer to start overtime, and Kayla Carter came down and answered with a three of her own, tying it back up at 57 all. After a pair of Aysha Harris free throws made it 59-57, a long delay on the court eventually led the four free throws for UWG, which Carter would take and hit three of the four. That put the Wolves up by five, and West Georgia was able to hold on for their third straight win.

Four Wolves scored In double-figures with Carter’s 21 leading all scorers. Aysha Harris added 14, while De’Ashia Jones had 11 and A’Kia Harris had 10. Additionally, A’Kia Harris pulled down 12 rebounds to record her eighth career double-double and fourth of the season.
