LIVINGSTON, Ala. – A season-high nine three-pointers from the UWG women’s basketball team along with a career-high 25 from Aysha Harris helped propel the Wolves to a 92-82 win over West Alabama on Saturday in Livingston, Alabama as the Wolves locked up a spot in the Gulf South Conference Tournament with the win. The Wolves finished the game shooting 51 percent from the field including the nine three-pointers, as D’Asia Cain, Jessica Brown, Aysha Harris, and Kilah Nixon each hit two with Kayla Carter hitting the ninth.
For Harris, she finished with a career-high 25 points to lead all scorers, giving the junior from Memphis, Tennessee a second-straight 20-point performance. Harris eclipsed the 300-point mark for the season and is the Wolves’ active leading scorer with 772 career points. The early part of the first quarter was slow, as the Wolves’ only bucket for the first two minutes of the contest came from a De’Ashia Jones free-throw. But, with three minutes gone in the game, the Wolves scored on back-to-back possessions off of steals from Aysha Harris and A’Kia Harris, taking a 7-3 lead at the media timeout.
Out of the timeout, Harris struck again, this time from three-point range to give the Wolves a 10-3 lead on the back of a 10-0 run. The Wolves continued pushing for the remainder of the quarter, finishing out the final 4:44 of the period with a 15-12 run to take a 25-15 advantage in the second quarter. In the second quarter, the Tigers mounted a comeback, outscoring the Wolves 16-12 over the first eight minutes of the period, then with 1:45 left in the half, Jessica Brown hit a big three-pointer, her second of the game, to push the UWG advantage back to nine at 40-31. The run would move to 8-0 over the final 1:49 of the first half and the Wolves led 45-31 heading into the locker room at the break. Kayla Carter led the Wolves at the half with 10 points, followed closely by Aysha Harris with nine and Jessica Brown with eight.
West Alabama opened the second half with a 10-1 run and cut the lead to just five at 46-41, forcing the Wolves to call a timeout. And out of that timeout, the Wolves responded with their own 6-0 run, aided by a pair of and-one plays from De’Ashia Jones and Aysha Harris to get it back to a double-digit advantage with 6:42 remaining in the third.
The Tigers finished the third quarter by getting the deficit back to single-digits, trailing 62-53 with 10 minutes remaining in the game.
To open the final quarter, West Alabama quickly cut it back down to five, at 62-57, but a D’Asia Cain three-pointer stretched it back to an 11-point, UWG lead with 6:47 remaining. West Alabama never got the deficit under five, and despite not hitting a field goal in the last 2:41 of the game, UWG hit 13 three-pointers over that span to finish off the Tigers.
Five Wolves finished in double-figures, led by Harris with the 25. Kayla Carter added 19 while Jessica Brown had 15. De’Ashia Jones fouled out with 11 points and D’Asia Cain was the fifth double-digit scorer with 10.
Brown just missed out on a double-double as the junior pulled down nine rebounds in the win.
UWG is now 15-11 with just one regular season game remaining and sit at 11-8 in league play. The Wolves wrap up the regular season next Thursday traveling to Montgomery, Alabama to take on AUM.
