CARROLLTON, Ga. – A big weekend looms for the women’s basketball team as the Wolves host a pair of Gulf South Conference games, beginning with a showdown with in-state rival Valdosta State on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
West Georgia enters the weekend 11-8 overall and 6-7 in the GSC after losing back-to-back games last week on the road at Union and CBU. VSU on the other hand, has won four straight games, putting the Blazers at 15-6 overall and 9-4 in league play.
Last time these two longtime rivals met, the Wolves handed the Blazers a 70-65 loss in Valdosta on the back of senior Aysha Harris’ 26 points.
In that game, the Wolves hit eight three-pointers, led by two each from Harris, Edley Drawhorn, and Taylor Brown.
Senior Jessica Brown led West Georgia’s offense in Saturday’s loss to Christian Brothers with 25 points, and was 5-of-8 from three-point range. And while UWG came up short in overtime, the Wolves got a good performance from A’Kia Harris as well. The senior finished the game with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Valdosta State is led by Kayla Bonilla and Crystal Townsend who each score 11.6 points per game. Townsend is coming off of an impressive 24 point, 12 rebound performance in a win over Montevallo last weekend.
Tip-off from The Coliseum on Thursday is set for 5:30 p.m. as the Wolves and Blazers meet for an important GSC clash as we near the final stretch of the regular season. Fans can follow the action at the above links.
