CARROLLTON, Ga. – The Gulf South Conference Thursday honored a University of West Georgia women’s basketball standout with a top academic honor. Forward Jessica Brown was named to the 2019 GSC Winter All-Academic Team.
Brown, a graduate student from Collierville, Tenn., was selected in balloting conducted by sports information directors and faculty athletic representatives from league schools. In the classroom, Brown was also a standout. After graduating a year ago with her degree in Biology, Brown played her final season as a graduate student, posting a 4.0 GPA while working on her master’s degree in Criminology.
Beyond her All-Academic honor, Brown also a now a four-time member of the Gulf South Conference Academic Honor Roll. She earned that distinction in each of the last three seasons at West Georgia, and she claimed the distinction following her freshman season at North Alabama in 2014-15.
Brown heads an impressive list of GSC Academic Honor Roll nominees from both UWG basketball teams. Joining Brown from the women’s team are graduate A’Kia Harris, senior Terrianna Cave, juniors Edley Drawhorn and Ashley Lee, and freshmen Zaria Bankston and Taylor Brown.
Six members of the West Georgia men’s team also earned academic honor roll status. The list includes sophomore Greg James, redshirt freshman Jordan Mount, and freshmen Michael Zabatakis, Tomasso Gini, Tajah Fraley, and Jared Simmons.
The GSC Academic Honor Roll is made of student-athletes who competed in fall contests, and who maintain an overall collegiate GPA of 3.0, or above. With the addition of the 12 members from men’s and women’s basketball, UWG has produced 77 academic honor roll members from the school’s fall and winter sports in 2018-19. That number is up from 55 at this same time a year ago.
