CARROLLTON, Ga. – The western swing of the Gulf South Conference schedule awaits the UWG women’s basketball team, and the road trip begins with a showdown on the road against Delta State on Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. EST.

The Wolves are coming off of a 1-1 weekend that saw West Alabama come into The Coliseum and steal a win before West Georgia rebounded with a decisive win over Montevallo on Saturday afternoon.

In Saturday’s win over Montevallo, three Wolves recorded double-doubles: De’Ashia Jones, Jessica Brown and A’Kia Harris. Harris recorded a career-high 18 rebounds on her way to a sixth-career double-double.

Delta State enters the matchup with an 8-11 overall record with a 6-7 mark in Gulf South Conference play. The Lady Statesmen are winners of their last two games, and look to stretch it to three against West Georgia, a team they have had success against historically. The Wolves and Statesmen have met 42 times previously with DSU leading the all-time series 36-6.

The Statesmen are the second best defense in the Gulf South Conference, allowing just 55.5 points per game. Offensively, Delta State ranks last in scoring, but the defense of Craig Roden’s squad keeps them in a lot of games.

It was a defensive battle the last time these teams met, back in December, as West Georgia edged DSU with a 55-54 win in Carrollton. UWG’s Aysha Harris led the Wolves on that day with 12 points.

Harris is the second leading scorer on the year for the Wolves, as Kayla Carter leads UWG with 13.6 per game. The defense for Harris, however, is of note as the junior has 70 steals and ranks sixth in the nation and leads the GSC with 3.5 steals per game.

For the Wolves to be successful, they will have to slow down Alondrea Rush who leads DSU with 14.9 points per game. In the last meeting, UWG held Rush to 13 points in the close, one-point victory.
