CARROLLTON, Ga. - Thursday was an eventful day for the University of West Georgia Athletic Department, as 106 student-athletes were named to the Fall Dean's List. In addition, UWG was one of eight Gulf South conference schools listed in the Learfield Directors' Cup fall standings.
The University of West Georgia lists Dean's List award winners as "Students who achieve a grade point ratio of 3.5 on a minimum of 12 semester hours of college level courses in which grades of A-F are given are placed on the Dean's List for that semester." Each of those students will likely be eligible for academic honors from the Gulf South Conference, which will announce it's fall Academic All-Conference and Academic Honor Roll recipients in January.
The success of the football program in 2017 earned West Georgia a spot in the Learfield Directors' Cup fall standings, also released on Thursday afternoon. As a department, the Wolves were 92nd of 127 ranked institutions. To earn the ranking, a Division II athletic program must send a team to the NCAA playoffs. Head coach David Dean, in his first year at the helm of the football program, took the Wolves to the second round of the NCAA playoffs, falling to eventual national runner-up West Florida.
Among the Gulf South Conference programs ranked in the Learfield standings, West Florida was tops in seventh place. Lee, West Alabama and Alabama Huntsville were all ahead of West Georgia, which is tied with Delta State. Just behind the Wolves and Statesmen are Mississippi College and North Alabama. The Learfield Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today.
