James Colzie

Defensive Coordinator/Secondary

If any member of the West Georgia Wolves’ coaching staff knows the terrain of the Gulf South Conference, it’s James Colzie. Beyond, not only does Colzie know the league, he knows winning and what it takes to be a champion in the nation’s toughest Division II conference.

Colzie comes to the West Georgia staff following a season as secondary coach and special teams’ coordinator at rival Valdosta State. There, he was part of staff that won the 2007 NCAA Division II title. Before coming to the Blazers, Colzie spent three seasons as a grad assistant and cornerbacks coach at his alma mater, Florida State. Also, he served from 1999-2004 as cornerbacks coach and assistant special teams coach at Florida International, and coached as the Miami Christian High.

Last year’s national title as a coach was nothing new for Colzie. As a player, he was part of the 1993 national championship team at Florida State. Beyond that season, Colzie was also part of two Orange Bowl title teams, one Sugar Bowl championship, and four Atlantic Coast Conference titles in football. He also signed a free agent contract and received a pro look from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Football wasn’t Colzie’s only notoriety at Florida State. He was a part of the Seminoles’ nationally renowned baseball program and spent time in the Montreal Expos’ organization.

Colzie holds a B.S. degree in International Affairs from Florida State, with a minor in Theater. He also earned a master’s degree in physical education. Single, Colzie lists hobbies as watching movies and ESPN.
