Converting individual brilliance into team success is the trademark of the great athlete. Few were as accomplished at this as Clay Wood during his brilliant baseball career with the West Georgia Braves. Wood brought All-America recognition to himself and did it during a time when the West Georgia Braves were among the nation's elite in Division II baseball. Wood was named the All-America third basemen following the 1978 season. That was a year in which he posted a .401 batting average and helped lead the Braves to a glorious season. West Georgia in '78 claimed the South Atlantic Conference title, hosted the NCAA Regional Tournament, and spent much of the season ranked number one in the nation. The team finished with a record of 33-9. A year later, Wood again was at the front of an outstanding West Georgia team. He finished 13th in the nation with 48 RBIs as the Braves, again, posted an impressive record (33-13) and advanced into post season play. Beyond his All-America notice, Wood also twice earned All-South Atlantic Conference honors. The native of Milledgeville also ended his career with a .348 batting average, one of the highest totals in West Georgia history.
