Murphy, from Thomasville, was mainstay of West Georgia's pitching staff from 1965-68. He earned honorable mention All-America honors, helped the team win two Georgia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles. He also remains in the school record book as the only West Georgia player ever to throw two no-hitters in a season. Murphy accomplished the feat in wins over Valdosta State and Jacksonville State in 1966.
