Hall of Fame

Dr. Gary Holmes
Induction Class of 2008
Baseball
Special Category

A team leader and top performer on the field, Gary Holmes was a mainstay during his playing days as a West Georgia Brave. The Rome area native was a two-sport performer, playing baseball and basketball. It was the former that brought Holmes the most notoriety as he won all-conference honors, was a team captain, and won the team batting title with an average of .388 while playing for legendary Hall of Fame Coach Tom D’Armi. After leaving West Georgia, Holmes’ made a positive impact on the lives of many young men and women. He was a successful teacher and administrator, including a long tenure as principal at Pepperell High School. Now retired and living on St. Simon’s Island, Holmes continues to bring honor to his alma mater as he continues to serve as President of the Georgia High School Association, a post he has held since 1978.
