Carrollton, GA - Despite one of the better hitting performances of the GSC part of the 2009 season, the West Georgia Wolves couldn't overcome North Alabama's solid hitting on Saturday afternoon in Florence, AL, as the Lions downed the Wolves 3-0 at Flowers Hall.
In the first game, North Alabama led from start to finish, taking a 25-17 victory. In that game, West Georgia hit .346 as a team and committed just two errors. But UNA's .412 hitting percentage trumped and led the Lions to the victory.
The second set began very much the same way, with UNA jumping out on top with a 14-9 lead early. But the Wolves clawed back, tying the game at 18. UWG never did take the lead in the game, but stayed right with the Lions, falling 26-24.
West Georgia, renewed in the third game, came out strong and took their first lead of the match at 6-5. But from that point on, North Alabama outscored the Wolves 20-9 to take a 25-15 win in the game and the match.
Freshmen
Audrey Hipple and
Mary K Krueger each had errorless afternoons for the Wolves, with Hipple leading the way with eight kills at a .615 hitting percentage. Krueger was right behind with seven kills at a .583 percentage, also leading the front line with four blocks.
Setter
Taylor Mense led the way for the Wolves' highest team hitting percentage (.205) since September 18 with 22 assists. On the defensive front,
Ellie Murphy led UWG on the night with 12 digs.
West Georgia finishes out the 2009 season next weekend at home against West Alabama on Friday evening at 7 p.m., followed by the season finale with West Florida on Saturday at 1 p.m.
