Carrollton, GA - The 2009 West Georgia Wolves found out Thursday night why Arkansas-Monticello quarterback
Scott Buisson is the reigning Gulf South Conference Offensive Player of the year, as the Boll Weevils spoiled the television debut of University Stadium with a 34-3 victory.
"We know we are not where we need to be yet, but there were some positives as well," said UWG head coach
Daryl Dickey. "I was proud of our defensive effort in the second half, holding them out on that goal line stand."
The series that the UWG coach was referring to came in the fourth quarter after UWG quarterback
Sean Gray was intercepted at midfield. The Boll Weevils, leading 34-3 at that point, drove down and had three shots from the UWG one yard line, but the UWG defense denied the end zone each time, turning the ball over to their offense on downs.
The game began, however, much differently, as Arkansas-Monticello put two scores on the board quickly in the first quarter. After the first touchdown, kicker
Joe Lamoureux's extra point hit off the upright, leaving the UAM lead at 6-0.
The Boll Weevils held on defense, followed by another quick Buisson drive that ended in a 14-yard touchdown pass to
Jaleel Harris. UAM attempted to go for two, but the try failed, giving the Boll Weevils a 12-0 advantage.
But Gray led his team right back down the field, throwing passes of 26 and 18 yards to
V.J. Hunt and
Matt O'Brien, respectively. The Wolves marched down the UAM 13, but the drive stalled, forcing an
Adi Brkic field goal attempt. His 30-yard field goal was good, pulling the Wolves to within 11 at 12-3.
The Wolves came close to the end zone three other times during the contest, but were denied each time.
Hunt led the Wolves on the night with five receptions for 66 yards. He was one of two UWG receivers with five catches, as freshman
Malcolm Johnson also hauled in five passes for 55 yards in the game.
West Georgia returns to the road next week with a visit to Russellville, Ark., and the Arkansas Tech Wonderboys.
