Carrollton, GA - Facing a tough opponent in their first road test of the season, the West Georgia Wolves came up just short against the Fort Valley State Wildcats, falling 73-55 at the FVSU Health and Physical Education Complex Wednesday night.
"We didn't play great tonight and we made some correctable mistakes," said head coach
Craig Roden. "When you have an off night in one area, you have to give yourself a chance in another and we just weren't able to do that tonight."
The Wolves struggled at the free-throw line, hitting just 17-of-37 free-throws on the night. In addition, a seasoned Fort Valley State squad out-rebounded the Wolves by a 43-34 count.
Despite the tough night on the stat sheet, West Georgia trailed by just eight at the break. in the first half, the Wolves used the strong inside game of
Anelia Murray to keep the Wildcats at bay. Murray led the Wolves on the night with 21 points. She and junior guard
Charlease Williams were the only UWG players in double-figures as Williams added 12.
But in the second half, missed opportunities at the free-throw line were too much for the Wolves to handle, as Fort Valley State took advantage of the UWG miscues and extended the lead to double-digits.
West Georgia returns home on Saturday for the first game of the 2009-10 Gulf South Conference Crossover, as West Division opponent Christian Brothers visits The Coliseum for a 2 p.m. tip.
