Milledgeville, GA –
A valiant comeback effort came up just short for the West Georgia Wolves here Saturday. After erasing a 12-point second half deficit, the Wolves saw the Georgia College Bobcats rebound to score the win, 80-76, at the Centennial Center on the Georgia College campus.

The Wolves trailed by 11 at the half, 44-33, and were still facing a double-digit deficit at 63-53 with 11:29 to play. For the next nine minutes UWG used hot shooting to cut into the Bobcats lead, and they finally claimed the edge at 76-74 when
Vojin Svilar drained a three-pointer with 2:26 on the clock.

From there, however, the game belonged to Georgia College. Graham Martin tied the game with a pair of free throws with 1:33 to play. Martin then hit a basket at the 40-second mark to give the Bobcats the lead at 78-76. Their final points came on a pair of Ty Rowland free throws with eight seconds remaining.

For West Georgia’s offense, which had sizzled with 67% (14-21) shooting in the second half, things went stagnant following Svilar’s go-ahead basket. The Wolves had three subsequent possessions and turned the ball over on each occasion.

Junior
Justin Cummings came off the bench to lead UWG’s scoring with 21. Senior John Pringle notched his second straight double-double with a 20-point, 11-rebound effort. Jake Rios paced Georgia College’s attack with 24 points. Reece Wiedman added 14, while Martin contributed 13 for the Bobcats.

West Georgia, now 1-2 on the season, shot 54.9% for the game, hitting 28-of-51 field goal attempts. They were a solid five-of-13 (38.5%) from beyond the three-point line, and 15-24 (62.5%) at the free throw line. Georgia College (2-0) shot 44.1% (30-68) from the field. However, the Bobcats had 17 more field goal attempts than did the Wolves, thanks to 16 offensive rebounds and committing but seven turnovers to the West Georgia’s 15.

The Wolves’ next action comes Tuesday as Christian Brothers visits The Coliseum for UWG’s 2009-2010 home opener. Tip time is set for 7:30 p.m.
