Carrollton, GA - UWG senior guard Renate Lopez hit a career-high five three-pointers on Saturday afternoon at The Coliseum, but it wasn't enough to upend Christian Brothers, as the Lady Bucs used a smothering defensive effort to beat the Wolves 42-35.
The loss marks a milestone in the history of women's basketball at West Georgia, as it was the first at The Coliseum. The Wolves were previously 8-0 on their home floor.
Interior play has been a big part of the Wolves' success to this point and Christian Brothers played to that strength on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Bucs packed their zone in tightly, allowing almost no pass through to the middle and forcing UWG to win with outside shooting.
The contest opened with three-pointers raining down, as the two teams combined for five three-pointers in the first 5:16. Unfortunately for the Wolves, four of those five came at from the hands of the Lady Bucs, as CBU built a 14-5 lead over that span.
West Georgia rallied over the next seven minute, outscoring Christian Brothers 9-2 and pulling to within a layup at 16-14 with just over seven minutes left in the first half. The Wolves pulled even closer on a
Kim Jones free-throw with 4:21 left that made the score 19-18.
But at that point, the UWG offensive went cold. The Wolves would not score again in the half and a layup by
Normanique Johnson at the buzzer gave CBU a 24-19 halftime advantage.
After the break, the cold spell continued, as Christian Brothers used a 5-1 run to open the half to push their lead out to 10. WIth that advantage, the Lady Bucs packed their zone tighter and ran their "Princeton" offense to near perfection, never allowing the Wolves to get closer than four points for the remainder of the game.
Lopez was the lone UWG scorer in double-figures on the night with a career-high 15 points. Jones paced the Wolves on the blocks with nine rebounds.
