Cleveland, MS - The Delta State Statesmen scored 28 points in the first half and West Georgia could not mount enough of a second-half comeback to overcome that fast start, as the Statesmen upended the Wolves in the 2009 season finale by a 48-7 count.
The Wolves did not have an answer for the DSU offensive on the afternoon, as the Statesmen rolled up 400 yards of rushing offense in the game. Using an athletic defense led by star Lardester Hicks-Green, Delta State stifled Yusef Holloway, the Wolves leading rusher on the year.
DSU opened the scoring early in the game, as quarterback Garrett DeWitt completed a pass to Trevar Deed for a 70-yard touchdown on the fifth play of the game.
UWG quarterback Brandon Behenna threw an interception on the ensuing drive, giving the Statesmen a short field that DeWitt and Co. used to their full advantage. Minutes later, DSU went up 14-0 on a Matt Johnson 16-yard touchdown run.
The score would remain the same until the 3:58 point of the second quarter, when Delta State pushed their lead out to a three-score advantage with a 52-yard touchdown pass from DeWitt to Ray Chisolm.
West Georgia didn't let that advantage hold for long, as backup quarterback Sean Gray used a 51-yard return from Waylon Kimble to bring the Wolves their first score of the day. His 34-yard pass to freshman receiver Kevin Myles was true, pulling the Wolves to within two scores with two minutes remaining in the half.
Delta State kept pushing and used a 42-yard rush on a fake punt to propel themselves to another score with just six ticks left on the clock, giving the Statesmen a 28-7 advantage heading into the locker room.
In the second half, DSU put up 20 more points to close out the scoring on the day and the season. The final score of the day came by way of Trevar Deed with 43 second remaining. That score was a four-yard score that capped a six-play, 51-yard drive.
The Wolves finish the season at 1-9 overall and 1-7 in the Gulf South Conference. Delta State moves to 5-5 and 4-4 in conference action.
