Bookmark and Share
Carrollton, GA - The 2009 women’s soccer campaign for the West Georgia Wolves was one that featured a lot of rain, several big wins and crushing losses, as the Wolves missed the Gulf South Conference tournament by one game. It all came down to the finale between UWG and Christian Brothers in Carrollton on Halloween. The Lady Bucs came out on that day firing on all cylinders, taking a 2-0 victory and earning the final spot for the 2009 GSC tournament.

The Schedule

With a very young team that featured just three seniors, head coach Marisa Kovacs tested her squad by fire with one of the most difficult schedules in the country. Of the Wolves’ 16 games, eight were against opponents that were ranked at one time or another during the season, including three against teams that reached a top-10 ranking during the 2009-10 campaign.

Wolves vs. the NCAA Tournament

One look at the NCAA postseason championship tournament would give any person pause against the UWG schedule. Of the 12 teams competing in the NCAA South Region tournament, eight took the field against the Wolves in the 2009 season. Of those eight, three reached the round of 16, two into the round of eight and West Florida reached the national semifinals for the second straight season. Despite going that far, the Lady Argonauts fell in the semifinal to California State-Dominguez Hills 1-1 and lost 4-1 on penalty kicks.

Postseason awards
Despite a season where the Wolves averaged less than a goal per game, the UWG soccer team still had several standout performances throughout the year. The team leader in points on the season was senior midfielder Jenna Greathouse, who had eight total points on the season. Of her eight points, four came on goals and four came on assists. The two goals equaling four points were both on free-kicks from 25 yards out. Greathouse, possessing one of the strongest legs on the team, hit both shots true, placing the ball just out of reach of the keeper. Her efforts earned a spot on the Gulf South All-Conference squad as a Second Team member. As a team, the Wolves were named to the NSCAA Academic honor roll with a team GPA of 3.34.
