Carrollton – Four University of West Georgia student-athletes were Monday honored for their athletic and academic prowess. The group has earned berths on the 2009 Gulf South Conference Spring All-Academic Team.

Two players each from UWG’s baseball and softball teams were voted to the squad. From baseball, senior Jud Jones and Cody Jackson received the honor; juniors Lindsy Kragt and Paige Hanson were voted from the UWG softball team. Also, Jones and Kragt were unanimous selections.

The Gulf South Conference All-Academic Team is chosen in a vote by Faculty Athletic Representatives and Sports Information Directors from the league’s institutions. Nominated student-athletes must have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.20 on a 4.00 scale for their entire academic career. Beyond on-field and academic prowess, voters also consider factors such as leaders, community service and extra-curricular activities.

Jones, a native of LaGrange, is a first baseman and Physical Education major with a 3.38 GPA. Jackson, from Hanceville, Ala., played third and carries a 3.26 GPA in Management. Kragt, a catcher and DP from Highlands, Colo., has a 3.67 GPA in Biology. Hanson, an outfielder from Oakwood, is also
majoring Biology and has a GPA of 3.78.

Thanks to Monday’s announcement, UWG has now doubles its total of GSC All-Academic student-athletes for the 2008-09 year. Previous, football player Jared Guberman, cross country’s Aaron Gall, soccer’s Erika Harvey, and women’s basketball player Shaneka Bates captured the honor.

Beyond the All-Academic Team, the GSC Monday also released its spring Academic Honor Roll. A total of 28 UWG student-athletes qualified for this distinction that requires competition at the varsity level, combined with an overall GPA of 3.0 or above for their collegiate careers.

The Wolves’ baseball team led the way on the honor roll with 14 members. Softball followed with eight honor roll student-athletes, while men’s golf produced five, and women’s golf had one qualifier.

A total of 68 UWG student-athletes earned GSC Academic Honor Roll distinction for the 2008-09 school year. That total represents the most UWG student-athletes ever to earn GSC Academic Honor Roll status.
