Carrollton, GA - It is always tough playing from behind. The West Georgia Wolves experienced that firsthand on Saturday evening, as the visiting West Alabama Tigers spoiled senior night with a 52-49 victory.
This game was especially important fo the Wolves, who would have had a chance at the postseason with a win on Saturday. The Wolves will have to try to catch West Florida now, as West Alabama holds a two-game lead on UWG with two to play and UWA won both meetings this year.
It was an uphill battle for the Wolves from the start on the night, as the offense just wouldn't come early. In the first five minutes of Saturday's contest, West Georgia managed only a layup from
Charlease Williams. On the other side, West Alabama couldn't miss, building an 18-2 advantage in that span.
The Wolves were able to use a strong defensive presence to get back in the game and even pulled to within four on a
Thomassian Wyatt jumper with 10 seconds left in the half. As the teams headed into the locker room, UWA led 27-23.
The strong play for the Wolves continued over the first five minutes of the second half, and an
Anelia Murray layup put West Georgia on top at 31-29 with 15:12 left in the contest.
That lead was short-lived, as Latashia Greer retook the lead for UWA less than a minute later. The Wolves pulled to within one with seven seconds left in the game, but could get no closer.
Williams and
Whitley Mayberry each had 11 points on the night to lead the Wolves, with Murray following with 10 points in the contest
