Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia Wolves ran into one of the hottest teams in the Gulf South Conference Monday night, as the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers kept their GSC East Division title hopes alive with a 75-56 victory at Spragins Hall.
UAH came in with a mission after blasting Valdosta State on Saturday night, their first game back following a tragedy on the Alabama-Huntsville campus two weeks ago. Monday's game was originally scheduled for Thursday night, but it was postponed to Monday.
The Chargers led for much of the first half, opening a 5-0 lead in the opening minutes of the contest. The Wolves would not go quietly, as senior
Jeremy Smith hit a three-pointer at the 11:28 mark to put his team up by a 12-10 margin.
West Georgia held onto the lead for the next two minutes, leading by as much as 15-12 at the 10:52 mark. But a surge by Alabama-Huntsville in the waning minutes of the first half pushed the Chargers up by as much as nine points in the first half. A Smith layup in the final minute cut the lead to seven at the half, as UAH led 34-27 heading into the locker room.
It was more of the same in the second half, as the "Princeton" style offense that the Chargers run took its toll on the Wolves. UAH pushed their lead out to as many as 21 in the second half before the final result of 75-56.
Smith was the lone UWG player in double-figures on the night, leading the way with 18 points. Huntsville's Zane Campbell led all scorers with 19 and Cody Lane tossed in a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
The Wolves' season closes out at Valdosta State on Saturday evening. First tip is set for 8 p.m.
