Carrollton, GA - Facing a virtual elimination game on Monday evening, the West Georgia Wolves fell 59-56 to the Alabama-Huntsville Lady Chargers, which put the 2010 postseason out of reach for the Wolves.
The Wolves did nearly everything a team needs to do to win a ballgame, but struggled by sending UAH to the foul line. The Lady Chargers made 18 free-throws on the night to West Georgia's three, effectively erasing the near-school record 23 steals from the Wolves on the night.
Alabama-Huntsville led nearly from bell-to-bell in this one, as the Lady Chargers opened a 6-0 lead in the first five minutes of the contest. UWG forward
Anelia Murray hit a layup to get the Wolves on the board at the 14:26 point, but the defensive battle continued.
In the first 13 minutes of the contest, the teams combined for 22 total points, with UAH holding a 15-7 lead. But over the final seven minutes of the half, the Wolves cut the Chargers' lead to 29-26, heading into the locker room at the half trailing by just three points.
Over the first 10 minutes of the second period, the Wolves and Chargers battled back-and-forth, with neither team holding larger than a three-point advantage. West Georgia kept things close down the stretch, but could ever gain the lead back in the final 10 minutes to fall to 9-16 on the year and 2-7 in GSC East play.
The season finale comes on Saturday night, as Wolves travel to Valdosta to take on the Lady Blazers of Valdosta State. Opening tip in that game is set for 6 p.m.
