Carrollton, GA - West Georgia seniors
John Pringle and
Jeremy Smith went out at home with a bang Wednesday night, as each player notched a double-double to lead the Wolves to a nail-biting 96-95 victory over Carver at The Coliseum on Senior Night.
Coming into the game, Pringle had six double-doubles this season to his credit and nine for his career. His 32 points and 14 rebounds were nearly his highest output of the season, as he had 34 points and 14 boards against West Florida. For Smith, his 19 points and 10 rebounds gave him his first career double-double.
But the Wolves needed every point that those two could muster and more against a gritty Carver team. The Wolves trailed for much of the first half, but went on a 11-0 run to close the first half, taking a 38-36 lead at halftime.
West Georgia led by as many as seven in the second half, but could not shake Cory Evans and the Cougars. Evans nearly equaled Pringle's output on the night, scoring a team-high 31 points for Carver. He led his team to a blistering 57 percent shooting from the floor in the second half.
The game remained close until the final horn. Smith was the hero in the final seconds, hitting the game-winning free-throw with 6.1 seconds to play and then stealing the ball as Carver's James Barbee was trying to get to the basket to possibly win the game in regulation.
Junior
Justin Cummings poured in 23 points on the night, a career-high and
Deion Sims added 14 points and a career-high seven assists to lead the UWG offensive attack.
The regular season concludes on Saturday night at Valdosta State, as the Wolves take on the Blazers at 8 p.m. UWG fans will be watching the West Alabama-Alabama-Huntsville game as well on Saturday, as a UWA loss in that game sends the Wolves to the Gulf South Conference tournament.
