Columbus, GA – Following Tuesday’s season opening win over Shorter, the West Georgia Wolves were looking to continue their winning ways here Wednesday afternoon. However, the Columbus State Cougars had other ideas.
Columbus State jumped to an early lead and was in control all the way, racing to a 14-2 win over the Wolves. The Cougars belted out 19 hits and took advantage of UWG defensive miscues to score three unearned runs in the game.
Offensively, West Georgia had but five hits in the contest. One was the Wolves’ first long ball of the year, a sixth inning, leadoff homer from the bat of first baseman Blake Parrott. The Wolves’ other run came in the fifth as right fielder Brandon Mainer stroked an RBI single plating catcher David Buchanan with the team’s first run of the afternoon.
Starter Kyle Parrish suffered the loss for the Wolves. He worked into the third before being lifted. Later, relievers Danny Beadling and Keith Manley worked a combined three-and-a-third innings of shutout relief for UWG.
The defeat drops West Georgia to 1-1 on the year; Columbus State was playing its season opener. UWG returns to action Saturday with a home double header vs. Tiffin (Ohio) at Cole Field.
