Carrollton, GA - The annual season opener with Albany State is normally a barn-burner, and Monday was no different, as the Wolves fell in the opener against ASU 3-2. In the nightcap, West Georgia struggled again, falling by a 7-6 count.
The Wolves opened up with a 1-0 lead early in game one, but one tough inning for freshman starter
Kate Gorczyca was enough for the Lady Rams to upend the Wolves, 3-2. In her first outing as a collegiate pitcher, Gorczyca went six innings, giving up three runs on six hits, with three of the runs and three of the hits coming in the bottom of the third inning.
In game two, the teams were tied at one through the fourth inning and it looked as if the second game would turn into a pitcher's duel. West Georgia broke ahead, though, taking a 5-3 lead in the top of the seventh.
A wild inning that featured six runs, six hits and two errors between the two teams ensued as the Lady Rams pulled out a shocker with the 7-6 victory.
West Georgia continues the road warrior month of February on Thursday afternoon, visiting Peach Belt Conference opponent Georgia Southwestern for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
