Carrollton, GA - Facing off against the 13th-ranked team in the nation in the Gulf South Conference opener on Sunday afternoon, the West Georgia Wolves put up a fight, but fell 11-1 and 11-7 in a doubleheader to West Florida.
UWF ace Jillian LaFrance was as good as advertised in the opener, allowing just one run on four hits. UWG third baseman
Crissy Rainwater brought the only run of the game after leading off the fourth inning with a solo home run.
But by then, the damage had already been done, as the Argonauts collected nine runs, including six unearned, in the top of the fourth to take a commanding lead.
In the second game, the Wolves jumped on the UWF pitching early, putting up four runs in the top of the first. The big strike in that inning came from freshman
Megan Garcia, who blasted her second home run of the season, this one a two-run job over the left field wall.
West Florida hopped right back into the game, putting five runs on the board in the top of the second and maintaining their lead for the remainder of the game. Sophomore
Haley Dunn recovered after a tough outing in the opener, allowing no runs on just one hit in the final 1 1/3 innings.
Another freshman outfielder,
Meagan Sitton, had her first home run of the season, a solo shot in the fifth. Sophomore
Lindsay Ellenburg was on fire in game two, going 4-for-4 in the game. She scored two runs in the course of the doubleheader and had one RBI.
West Georgia returns to the University Field diamond on Monday at noon, facing off against the Valdosta State Blazers. Valdosta State comes into the week ranked third in the nation and lost for the first this season earlier today, falling 1-0 and 5-4 to 11th-ranked Alabama-Huntsville.
