Valdosta, GA - No one ever said that the East was not the Beast in GSC softball this season. The West Georgia Wolves found that our here Saturday, falling 8-0 in both ends of a doubleheader to the Valdosta State Blazers.

The Wolves couldn't muster anything on the offensive end against the powerful VSU pitching. The third-ranked team in the nation used the strong arms of Holly Satterfield and Margaret Carter to allow just nine hits in the two games, pitching a five-inning shutout in the first game and a six-inning shutout in the nightcap.

Sophomore Kaley Sullivan and freshman Meagan Sitton were the only Wolves with mutliple hits on the day, as Sullivan was 3-for-6 and Sitton was 2-for-6 in the doubleheader.

The Blazers wasted little time in getting down to business in the opener. Sitton reached on an error in the top of the first, but would move no further. VSU then scored three runs in the bottom of the inning, all on a three-run homer by Alyssa Shirey, who had three dingers on the afternoon.

When the dust settled at the close of the first game, Satterfield had allowed just three hits and five baserunners in total. Freshman hurler Ashley West struggled against the VSU lineup, allowing eight runs on 10 hits in the game while striking out three.

In the nightcap, freshman starter Rachel Segers gave up just two runs on six hits in the first four innings of the contest, keeping the Wolves in the game. But in the fifth, the wheels fell off, as Segers gave up five runs on four home runs in the stanza, as VSU took complete control of the game.

The Wolves fall to 16-37 on the season and 4-17 in GSC East Division play. VSU moves to 36-5 and 19-4 in conference play. West Georgia continues the southern road trip on Sunday afternoon, facing off with Wst Florida in Pensacola a 1 p.m.
