Lassetter in top-four heading into final day

Hot Springs, Ark. - The middle round at the GSC Championships was the most productive for the West Georgia Wolves as a team, as the Wolves jumped over Henderson State and sit in fifth place heading into the final round on Tuesday.

The Wolves shaved 11 strokes off of their first-round total, finishing with a 293 in the second round. That number was thanks largely to a massive opening round from junior Zach Lassetter and a huge turnaround for Ryan Chitwood and Bryn Powers in the second round.

Lassetter tied for the low round of the tournament in the first round with a 68, including a hole-in-one, then followed that up with a 75 in the second round. He sits at 1-under par heading into the final round, one of just seven golfers at the 2010 GSC tournament that is in the red.

Chitwood and Powers matched each other stroke for stroke, as each player shot a 79 in the first round, the followed up with a 1-under par 71 in the second round. The pair are currently in a four-way tie for 21st place at 6-over par for the tournament.

Next on the board for the Wolves is Eric Alvarez, who knocked one shot off of his first-round total, shooting a 77 in the second round and netting a tie for 35th place. The final player is Daniel Guthrie, who rebounded after a tough 82 in the first round to shoot 76 in the afternoon session.

The Wolves and the rest of the conference will complete the 2010 GSC Championships at Hot Springs Country Club tomorrow morning. The top five golfers will be named to the All-Tournament team, with the All-Conference team set to be named on Wednesday.

First Round Recap
West Georgia's men's golf team has had a roller coaster spring thus far. If Monday's first-round is any indication, this year's Gulf South Conference Championships could be the most special moment of the 2009-10 academic year, as junior Zach Lassetter leads the field. As a team, the Wolves are currently in sixth place.

Lassetter has been the talk of the tournament thus far, as he had a hole-in-one on the Par 3 175-yard eighth hole. He used that to propel himself into the lead at the end of the first round, firing a 68. He sits just one stroke ahead of North Alabama's Brett Munson.

As a team, the Wolves are in the middle of the pack at the tourney, shooting a 304 to finish the first round in sixth place overall. West Georgia is two strokes back of Henderson State and 15 strokes behind leader North Alabama.

After Lassetter, the next player on the board was Eric Alvarez, who shot a 39 on the front and back nine to finish the opening round in 32nd place. Just behind Alvarez was Bryn Powers and Ryan Chitwood, who each had a 79 to settle in with a tie for 37th place.

The final UWG golfer in the clubhouse for the first round was Daniel Guthrie, who shot a first-round 82 to close out the opening 18 in 50th place.

The Wolves will compete in the second round of the 2010 GSC Championships this afternoon, with the final round at the Hot Springs Country Club set for tomorrow morning.
