Dahlonega, Ga. – The West Georgia Wolves pushed the 17
th ranked North Georgia Saints to the wall here Wednesday. However, as has been the case several times this season, the Wolves saw an early lead go the by the boards as the Saints rallied twice from behind to hand the Wolves yet another heartbreaking defeat.
North Georgia scored the tying the run in the bottom of the ninth, and then added the game-winner in the 10
th to score a 5-4 win over the Wolves.
UWG, in typical fashion, jumped on top early. The Wolves pushed across a single run in the second as
Brandon Mainor, who was hit by a pitch, came home on a
Mike Markakis two-out single.
The lead jumped to 3-0 in the third.
Brandon Behenna doubled to lead off the inning, which was followed by
Michael Hollis reaching as a hit batsman. Behenna later scored on a Markakis RBI single, while Hollis came home when
Michael Hornsby lofted a sacrifice fly.
After North Georgia rallied for three to tie the game in the sixth, UWG came back to reclaim a 4-3 edge in the ninth. A Hollis infield hit, sacrifice bunt from Markakis, and two-out, RBI single from Hornsby sent the Wolves out in the bottom of the ninth only three outs away from a huge upset.
Alas, North Georgia showed its mettle. The Saints tied the game with a ninth inning homer, and then won it with a solo run in the 10
th.
Wednesday’s loss drops the Wolves to 13-37 on the season, while North improved to 30-14.
West Georgia returns to action Saturday at home vs. West Alabama in a GSC East double header. Game one is set for 1:00 p.m. Also, between games, Senior Day activities are planned to honor this year’s UWG senior class.
