Carrollton, GA - Tuesday marks the first of two home games this week as the West Georgia Wolves close out the 2010 baseball season. Tomorrow's opponent will be Georgia Southwestern at 5 p.m., followed by a 6 p.m. contest against Augusta State on Wednesday in the season finale.
Even with a pair of losses on Sunday, the Wolves have slowly been becoming a solid hitting team. West Georgia enters the final week of the season hitting .292 as a team. Leading the way in that category is a pair of seniors in
Michael Hornsby and
Ben Lillis.
Hornsby leads the team with a .376 average on the year with team-leading 68 hits and 48 runs scored. That number seems to be one that could hold and give the Carrollton native the UWG batting title for the season, as Lillis is second on the team at .353.
Freshman
Brett Wright has been a bright spot this season, especially in Gulf South Conference play. The Wolves completed the GSC season on Sunday and Wright closes out the year with a .527 batting averaging in conference play, the best average in the entire GSC in that category.
Tuesday's game against Georgia Southwestern is a make-up game from March 11, which was cancelled due to weather. The Wolves and Hurricanes met on February 27 for a doubleheader, with GSW taking both ends 9-6 and 4-1.
The Hurricanes come into the game with a 26-18 record and 12-12 in Peach Belt play. That record has given Georgia Southwestern a ticket to the postseason, as they will be the fourth seed out of the PBC West in next week's Peach Belt tournament, facing Francis Marion.
Wednesday brings another PBC opponent to Cole Field, this time as the Augusta State Jaguars, a team that has not had a great season this year. The Jaguars are 15-31 overall with a 5-18 record in the conference, coming in fifth place in the PBC West.
