Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia Wolves hung tough for six innings on Tuesday evening at Cole Field, but a five-run seventh pushed Georgia Southwestern over the top, handing UWG an 8-2 loss.
The Wolves played small-ball early in the game, as
Brett Wright reached on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the first. With one out, the UWG freshman stole second, then advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Justin Smith finished off Wright's trip around the bases with a sacrifice fly, giving starter #Anthony Winborne a 1-0 lead.
The UWG starter worked a perfect first inning, the was pulled in top of the second after three walks and a hit batter tied the game for Georgia Southwestern.
Marc Nellist came in and picked up a strikeout to end the inning.
Both teams added a run in the fourth and the Hurricanes put one more on the board in the fifth, setting up the decisive seventh. In that stanza, GSW had five runs on five hits, giving their bullpen all it needed to finish the job. The 'Canes relievers allowed just one hit over the final three innings to complete the road victory.
Michael Hornsby and Smith, both seniors, each had two hits on the afternoon to lead the Wolves at the plate.
Michael Hollis and Wright each scored a run, while Smith and
Josh Whitehead had the RBI on the afternoon.
West Georgia falls to 13-40 on the season while Georgia Southwestern moves to 27-18. The Wolves complete the 2010 season on Wednesday night, facing off with Augusta State at Cole Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
