UWG Places Six on All-Academic Teams

Carrollton, GA – Six University of West Georgia student-athletes have received honors for their achievements on the field, and in the classroom.
The UWG contingent was Wednesday named to the 2010 Gulf South Conference Spring All-Academic Team. The team was chosen in a joint vote of the league’s Sports Information Directors (SIDs) and Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs).
Two West Georgia representatives were unanimous selections to the team. Baseball player Justin Smith and softball star Lindsay Ellenburg were named on each ballot cast by league institutions.
Smith, a senior shortstop from Dawsonville, was voted first team All-GSC East for his performance on the field in 2010. Majoring in Biology, Smith carries a grade point average (GPA) of 3.26. Ellenburg, a sophomore second baseman from Lawrenceville, earned All-GSC East second team honors in 2010. She is a Psychology major with a 3.32 GPA.
Two baseball teammates join Smith on the All-Academic Team. Senior infielder Ben Lillis of Augusta, and Brett Wright, a redshirt freshman outfielder from Waco, also earned the honor. Lillis is majoring in Physical Education and has a 3.37 GPA, while Wright is majoring in Finance and boasts a GPA of 3.40.
Two Wolves golfers were also chosen for the All-Academic Team. Junior Sarah Ross (London, Ontario, Canada) earned the honor as a three-time All-GSC performer on the course, and as a Psychology major with a
3.25 GPA. Also, sophomore Bryn Powers of Carrollton earned the honor. Powers, who earned All-Tournament honors at the GSC Championships, is Chemistry (Pre-Med) major with a GPA of 3.65.
Wednesday announcement gives West Georgia a total of eight GSC All-Academic student-athletes for the 2009-10 academic year. Soccer standout Jenna Gratehouse and men’s cross country performer Dan Moffitt were members of the GSC Fall All-Academic Team.
With their selection to the Spring All-Academic Team, all six honorees are also members of the GSC Spring Academic Honor Roll. They are among 29 student-athletes to earn the honor from West Georgia’s four spring sports teams.
Heading UWG’s Honor Roll contingent are 14 members of the baseball team. Also, eight Wolves softball players earned the distinction, as did four men’s golfers and three from the women’s golf team. The entire UWG athletic program produced a record 69 GSC Honor Roll members for the recently completed school year.
This total includes one two-sport student-athlete: Brandon Behenna. The junior from Sharpsburg earned Honor Roll distinction as a member of both the football and baseball teams.
