Carrollton, GA – The West Georgia Wolves’ impressive 2010-11 recruiting class continues to grow in both quality and quantity.

Head Coach Michael Cooney Wednesday announced the addition of Marcus Cowan to his team’s list of incoming talent. Cowan, a 6-8, 230-pound post player, comes to UWG following a freshman season at Division I Tennessee State of the Ohio Valley Conference.

Cowan will be a sophomore with three seasons of eligibility remaining when he enrolls at West Georgia in August.

“We’re very excited about signing Marcus,” said Cooney. “He is a very good player, and a great person; a high character person. This is a huge addition for our program.”

Cooney raves about the package of skills Cowan brings to UWG. “Marcus is a beast,” says the coach. “He is very physical and a good defender who controls the paint.”

Offensively, Cooney says of Cowan, “He has very good hands, is a good passer, a good free throw shooter and has a good mid-range jump shot.”

A native of Lithonia, Cowan was a prep standout for coach Caesar Burgess at Chamblee High in the Atlanta area.

“Marcus is an excellent student-athlete,” says Burgess. “He is a kid with outstanding character and will be a great addition to the West Georgia basketball program.”

Cowan brings impressive academic credentials to West Georgia, as well. He scored a 1,270 on his SAT in high school, and brings a 3.8 GPA with 30 credit hours following his transfer from Tennessee State. He is expecting to major in Biology and has designs on a career as a pharmacist.

While Cooney is looking for big things from Cowan, the Wolves’ newest recruit is also looking forward to being part of the UWG family.

"I think this is a great situation for me,” said Cowan. He added, “I believe this is a great fit with a great coaching staff. They will develop you and work you hard, but in the end you will get results. I met with some of the players during my visit, and we think we are going to have a really good year.”

Cowan is West Georgia’s fifth recruit for the upcoming season. Earlier, the Wolves added juco transfers Travis Ellison (6-6, forward) and Austin Collins (6-5, wing) from Waycross College. Also, UWG signed a pair of high school performers: 6-2 guard Taylor Cochran of Fayetteville, Ark., and Alex Upshaw, a 6-5 forward from Sandy Creek High School in Fayetteville.

Cooney says that he is likely to add one more signee before the end of the current recruiting season.
