Carrollton, GA – After stellar careers on the playing field, two former University of West Georgia stars have received recognition from the Gulf South Conference.
Ron Riddle (baseball) and Candice Brown (softball) were Thursday named members of the GSC Spring Sports All-Decade Teams. The teams were chosen in balloting conducted by sports information directors (SIDs) from throughout the conference.
Riddle was a first team selection to the GSC East All-Decade Baseball Team. The native of Cumming was a two-time, team batting champion at UWG with averages of .430 and .415 during the 2001 and 2002 seasons, respectively. He was a two-time All-GSC selection, twice named All-South Central Region, and was a member of the 2001 ABCA Coaches All-America Team.
Brown, a native of Melbourne, Fla., was named a second team member of the GSC East All-Decade Softball Team. Her career highlights include twice being named All-GSC East First Team, a career batting average of .305, and she holds the school all-time stolen base with 50 career thefts.
Thursday’s announcement brings the total to 11 of former UWG standouts selected to various GSC All-Decade Teams. Previously, former football greats Nate Coggins, Nick Price and Marquis Floyd, along with soccer standout Sara Sohlberg were chosen to the Fall All-Decade Team. Also, basketball greats Tai Wilson, Dominic Cranford, Ashley Huff, Andy Young and Darnell Miller were named to the GSC Winter All-Decade Team. Also, Wilson was named GSC Player of the Decade in women’s basketball.
