Birmingham, AL—The Gulf South Conference officially closes the door on another exciting decade of collegiate athletics with the release of the GSC Fall Sports All-Decade Teams (2000-09). With the announcement, five UWG players were named to the Fall Teams.
The initiative marks the first time that the Conference has compiled an All-Decade list for sports other than football. Previously, the GSC has recognized football all-star teams from the 1980’s, the first Quarter Century (1971-1975) and the 1990’s.
Players could only be nominated for the All-Decade Team if they competed in at least two seasons during the decade and were also named to the All-GSC First Team at least once. Each squad was broken up into First and Second Teams and Players and Coaches of the Decade were selected.
Honorable Mentions were also recognized in special circumstances; for example, those student-athletes that competed in just one season and were an All-GSC First Team member during the past decade. The league office decided to designate the men’s and women’s soccer squads as “All-Time Teams” because the GSC has only sponsored the sport since 1996.
For football, West Georgia had four players named to the All-Decade team, headlined by First-Team honoree Nate Coggins, played at West Georgia from 1998-2001 one of the most decorated players in school history. He was a three-time All-GSC First Team honoree and won the 2001 GSC Player of the Year award and was inducted into the West Georgia Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007.
Two of Coggins' running mates were selected as well, as running back NIck Price and defensive back Marquis Floyd were both named to the All-Decade Second Team. Price also played from 1998-2001 and holds the UWG record for rushing yards in a game (235), season (1,409) and career (3,404) and was inducted into the West Georgia Athletic Hall of Fame with Coggins in 2007.
Floyd was a two-time All-American at West Georgia, playing from 1999-2002. He left Carrollton as the all-time leader in interceptions in a game (3), a season (9) and a career (19). After spending last season with the NFL's Dallas Cowboys, he was recently picked up by the Seattle Seahawks. Floyd was inducted into the UWG Hall of Fame in 2008.
The final UWG representative on the Football All-Decade Team had an enormous impact in his lone season in a West Georgia uniform. Kelvin Morris played in his senior season of 2005 and was a terror at linebacker, earning GSC Defensive Player of the Year honors and a trip to the Cactus Bowl, the Division II Senior Bowl.
The Gulf South Conference release an All-Decade Team for women's soccer, with West Georgia claiming an honorable mention award for the 2005 GSC Co-Player of the Year Sara Sohlberg, who played just one season, but holds the career record for goals with 27.
