Carrollton, GA - The University of West Georgia volleyball team kicks off their 2010 season this Friday at 9:30 a.m., as they will take on Dominican College in the opening game of the Saint Leo Lion Classic. The Wolves will play four matches over the course of Friday and Saturday.
Hitting is the name of the game in volleyball, and there were few hitters that were more productive for the Wolves in 2009 than Audrey Hipple. Entering her sophomore year this season, Hipple will be counted on heavily offensively this season as the Wolves look to return to the Gulf South Conference tournament.
A product out of Lilburn’s Parkview High School, Hipple led the team in 2009 in kills with 227 and in service aces with 36. Her best night of the season came in a win over Fort Valley State, where she had 12 kills with a .450 hitting percentage.
What is your Major?
Criminology
Was that a part of the CSI Effect?
(Laughing) Maybe a little bit. I have always been interested in criminology, but it may have something to do with all of the shows like that.
How was the off-season for you this year?
I had a great time working out and getting ready for this year, but I truly enjoyed working with the club team A5. I love helping young players with their confidence on the court and it was fun running them through conditioning drills and hitting with them.
What are your thoughts on the upcoming season?
I’m excited about the fact that we will have more depth this year and how we are coming together as a team. I played club ball with Reagin Boggs for a year, so I am excited to be able to play with her again.
What is your secret to hitting?
I played softball until I was in eighth grade and that helped me with my arm speed to deliver a strike to the ball. Most of the time, I just want to get the ball in aggressively and get points for the team.
The Wolves’ home opener is set for Tuesday evening against Division III power Emory. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at The Coliseum on the University of West Georgia campus.
